Congratulations to UMaine student-athletes — July 1

This week’s headline on an America East news release says it all: “Maine Captures Academic Cup as AE Student-Athletes Shatter GPA Record.”

For the third time, University of Maine student-athletes have brought home the America East Walter Harrison Academic Cup, presented annually to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest grade-point average during the academic year. This year’s achievement is remarkable not only in the context of the pandemic, but in the student-athletes’ record-setting institutional grade point average of 3.62 — the highest GPA recorded in league history.

In addition, five UMaine teams earned GPA titles — the most of any America East athletics program. Women’s Basketball had a 3.92 GPA, which was the highest of any America East team in any sport. Also awarded individual sport GPA titles: Field Hockey (3.70), Women’s Soccer (3.84), Women’s Swimming & Diving (3.67), and Men’s Track & Field (3.47).

We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes for their perseverance during particularly challenging times this past academic year, and their dedication to excellence in their sports and in their academic areas. We also thank the team of coaches, athletics staff and UMaine faculty whose individual and collective contributions to student success helped make these latest America East accolades possible.

Our student-athletes have given Black Bears everywhere incredibly important reasons to cheer.
