Community message: July 3

Dear members of the University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias communities,

On this, my third day as your president, I want to take a moment to let you know how excited I am at the opportunity to collaborate with all of you to continue the wonderful work underway at the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias. I welcome the chance to listen to you, and hear your hopes and ideas for the future that we will construct — together — for these outstanding institutions.

The campus in Orono is beautiful, even at the height of summer heat. During my explorations over the past few days, I feel like I’ve had a preview of the university in the other seasons. The pride that so many take in their academic and professional work to make this a great campus, the seriousness of students studying in the Union and under the trees on the Mall, the commitment of faculty to move their research and scholarship forward, the dedication of staff, and the care and attention of the leadership — all are so visible.

Thank you very much for the hearty welcome you have extended to my family and me.

I look forward to my upcoming trip to Machias, where I know there is the same kind of vibrant community and commitment.

All the best for whatever your summer will be — perhaps a mix of renewal, relaxation and reflection, together with your continued efforts to learn, develop knowledge, and engage for the university, the state of Maine and beyond. I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks and months, and to hearing about the interesting things you are doing.

It is great to finally be a Black Bear and a Clipper!

President, University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias
