Exciting Faculty-Led Study Abroad Opportunity in Lisbon, Portugal!

In May of 2024, embark on an exciting journey to Lisbon, Portugal and explore its dynamic and innovative approach to drug policy with University of Maine professors Rob Glover and Karyn Sporer

This three-week May-term study abroad program offers a unique opportunity to learn from experts in the field and gain hands-on experience in a country that has taken a public-health oriented  approach to substance use. Earn UMaine course credit while learning about this path-defining policy approach from experts and practitioners!

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is renowned for its liberal drug policy and harm reduction strategies. During your time in Lisbon, you’ll have the chance to learn from the architects of this policy, speak with healthcare professionals, lawmakers, and law enforcement, and engage with local organizations working to reduce drug-related harm. 

Through immersive lectures, workshops, and site visits, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the history and current state of drug policy in Portugal, and how it has impacted both the country’s citizens and global drug policy. 

This study abroad program is ideal for students interested in public health, criminal justice, law, and health care. You’ll leave with a unique perspective on substance use and policy, as well as valuable skills and experiences that will set you apart in your future studies and eventual career.
