Community Message on death of George Floyd from the University of Maine Police Department
The death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police officers was reprehensible and disturbing. We all extend our condolences to George Floyd’s family and friends. We stand firmly on the side of equity and inclusion at the University of Maine.
The actions of the officers involved are inconsistent with the protocols of the police profession and are indefensible. Lack of compassion and excessive force sabotages the efforts of law enforcement to build public trust. The focus should be on de-escalation techniques in tense situations to preclude the use of force if possible.
The sanctity of life, safety and justice must be foremost for all, discrimination in any form will not tolerated by UMPD.
