Message from the Chief of Police about COVID-19

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene and the student has been transported to a local hospital. The student’s family has been informed.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 or you may call the Dean of Students Office at 207-581-1406.

An investigation is underway and more details will be released when they become available. Our thoughts are with the student and their family.

Long Road has been cleared and is now accessible. Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact Lieutenant Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu.

Day and night, the University of Maine Police Department is committed to the safety and welfare of all members of the UMaine community. We are closely monitoring the rapidly changing COVID-19 pandemic and assure you that our dedication to protecting our community is stronger than ever. You will continue to have the same level of service from our personnel. UMPD are always prepared to respond to emergencies and help ensure the safety of community members during this public health crisis.

UMPD follows the public health protocols of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Maine Center for Disease Control, the Maine Emergency Management Agency and Maine Public Safety guidance for law enforcement agencies.

If you call UMPD (581.4040) to request officer assistance, the dispatch personnel will ask if you may have been exposed to COVID-19. Officers responding to a nonemergency will ask individuals reporting the incident to meet in an open area and maintain proper social distancing (6 feet apart). Some nonemergency calls may be able to be resolved over the telephone.
