Marrs in Paris and Tübingen – February 2014

Marrs offers master classes in Paris and Tübingen

In February of 2014, taking advantage of a research trip to the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland, Dr. Marrs offered master classes at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, hosted by Prof. Frédéric Macarez and another at the Musikschule Tübingen for their students and students from Stuttgart, Germany, hosted by Prof. Walter Stegmaier.  In both cases the students had prepared pieces from Elliott Carter’s Eight Pieces for Four Timpani to play for me. As one would expect from these distinguished institutions, the students performed at a very high level and it was a joy to be able to discuss the fine musical and technical points that these amazing pieces demand. As you will see in the images below, not everyone who attended was able to perform, but in the master class setting a great deal of information can be gleaned whether you are a member of the audience or the student baring her or his musical soul to the guest teacher in front of everyone! They all performed impressively.
