SUMMARY:St. Distaff's Day
DESCRIPTION:St. Distaff’s Day is traditionally held in January\, the day after the feast of the Epiphany\, one of many unoffical holidays in Catholic nations.   The distaff used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women’s work.  The day\, which was also known as Roc Day (referring to another name for either the distaff or the spindle) indicated that this was the end of the Christmas festivities and the return to the normality of spinning whenever there was a spare moment.  Women of all classes would spend their evenings spinning on the wheel. During the day\, they would carry a drop spindle with them. Spinning was the only means of turning raw wool\, cotton or flax into thread\, which could then be woven into cloth.  Men have their own way of celebrating this occasion; this is done through Plough Monday. It is the first Monday after Epiphany where men are supposed to get back to work. \nOur annual St Distaff’s Day celebration is scheduled for Saturday\, January 10\, from 10:30-2:30 at the Page Farm and Home Museum. Bring whatever spinning\, knitting\, weaving\, quilting\, felting\, hooking\, braiding\, origami\, or other project you’re working on\, a mug for tea or cocoa (we’ll have the hot water urn set up) and\, if you like\, a treat to share. For those new to the group\, or who just need a memory jog\, St Distaff’s Day (also known as Roc Day) is a centuries-old custom named for the distaff or roc\, a tool that holds fiber prepared for spinning. It took place on the first day after Epiphany\, the end of the liturgical Christmas season. On this day\, with all the holiday cooking and cleaning hullaballoo finally behind them\, women went back to their normal everyday household tasks\, which included spinning wool and flax. Men didn’t have to get back to work until the first Monday after Epiphany. Apparently\, many of them used their extra days off playing pranks on the busy women\, with such stunts as lighting their fiber on fire. No pranks like that for our celebration: just fiber & textile fun\, laughter\, and good conversation. \n

SUMMARY:Maine Maple Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled.  We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and following the guidance of the University of Maine President’s Office\, local health officials and the CDC. \nMaine Maple Sunday® is a long standing tradition where Maine’s Maple producers open their doors to their sweet operations for a day of educational demonstrations\, sugarbush tours\, fun family activities and samplings of syrup and other great maple products. \nAt 1:00 PM\, the Page Farm and Home Museum will show the award-winning film\, “The Maple Sugaring Story\,” a 29-minute video production\, narrated by noted Folk Musician Margaret MacArthur and Sugarmaker Frank Dodge. \nThe story of Maple Sugaring is about more than maple production. It’s about people – from the early times of the Northeastern North Americans\, to the European Colonists\, to those who today work with the land and nature in a time-honored way\, harvesting and processing the product of a phenomenon that occurs in just one region of the world for only a brief time each year. The yield is a pure\, natural delicacy cherished for its unique flavor\, and its ability to provide special joy at the end of long cold winters\, heralding the arrival of spring. It’s about industry\, purity\, tradition\, evolution of technology\, ecological problems and a host of other topics and concepts connected with the world in which we live. \nRound out your Maine Maple Sunday experience with a visit the University of Maine’s maple sugaring operation\, Thomas J. Corcoran Sugarhouse\, for a guided walking tour of the sugarbush and a tour of the sugarhouse\, where sap is simmered into syrup.  The Thomas J. Corcoran Sugar House is located on the Lucy Thompson Road\, which is off the College Avenue Extension\, approximately 1/4 of a mile north of the intersection of Stillwater Avenue and College Avenue.  A sign is always posted at the roadside when we are boiling. \n

SUMMARY:Going Green with Dryer Balls
DESCRIPTION:Stop using toxic dryer sheets and start using your own hand-made\, natural\, non-toxic dryer balls. \nWhy? \n1) Dryer balls reduce drying time by 25% and help clothes dry more efficiently which saves energy and money. \n2) Dryer balls replace both dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener. \n3) Dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener can cause ezcema\, and coat your clothing with chemicals.  Wool dryer balls are an all-natural\, chemical-free alternative. \n4)  Dryer balls fluff up your down items\, such as jackets and blankets. \n5)  Dryer balls don’t have an artificial smell and can be scented with natural oils like lavender\, citrus\, etc. \n6) Liquid fabric softener will coat your towels\, making them less absorbent. \n7) Dryer balls last 2-4 years and for over 1\,000 loads which minimizes waste.  Dryer sheets and fabric softener containers must be thrown away frequently and take up space in a landfill. \nDryer balls are better for the environment and your health. \nCome to the Page Farm and Home Museum and we can show you how easy it is to make your own.  Make up to three to take home for a material fee of just $6.  The workshop is free.  FMI or to register : 581-4100

SUMMARY:Dr. Edith Marion Patch Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Dr. Edith Marion Patch to celebrate the opening of the Dr. Edith Marion Patch Exhibit.  Edith Marion Patch was the first woman scientist employed by the University of Maine. She arrived in Orono in 1903 to start the entomology department at the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station\, but had to work for a year before the board would approve her salary. Some\, it seemed\, had doubts as to whether a woman could do the job! Edith Patch proved them wrong\, and proved herself a dedicated and skilled scientist. She earned her Masters degree at the University of Maine in 1910\, and her doctorate from Cornell University in the following year. She earned the respect of her scientific colleagues\, who elected her a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1913\, and president of the Entomological Society of America in 1930.\n \nThe Friends of Dr. Edith Marion Patch are working to preserve and carry on the scientific\, environmental\, and educational legacy of this internationally renowned Maine woman.  Our efforts include educational programs and publications for youth and adults\, and rehabilitation of Dr. Patch’s historic home\, Braeside\, just north of the campus of the University of Maine.  RSVP by calling 581-4100. SUMMARY:Wreathmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The annual wreath-making workshops will be held this year on Saturday\, Nov. 25\, from 11-1 and again 5-7; Tuesday\, Nov 28\, from 5-7 p.m.; and Thursday\, Nov. 30 from 6-8 p.m.\, offering participants an opportunity to enjoy a hands-on start to the holiday season. \nLocal wreath-wrapper\, James Smith and Museum Director\, Patricia Henner\, who has been conducting wreath workshops at the museum for over 10 years\, will offer both novice and expert wreath-makers the materials and instruction necessary to take home a decorative wreath to last for months. \nAn $20 charge covers the cost of materials — one 12-inch ring\, balsam fir\, arborvitae and white pine boughs\, pine cones\, reindeer moss and ribbon to make a bow (with instruction).  Feel free to bring natural decorations from your own yard to add to your special\, one-of-a-kind wreath. \nBecause space limits participation to 14 people for each of the  workshops\, the Museum encourages early registration.  These workshops always fill up quickly. \nFor people who wish to buy a locally made holiday wreath\, The museum will be selling completed wreaths beginning Nov. 18 for $25\, proceeds are used to support the non-profit Museum’s educational programs. The prepared wreaths are made at the Museum with five pounds of fresh\, fragrant and hand-wrapped fir bough tips and are decorated with pine cones\, berries and ribbon. They can be picked up at the Museum or delivered locally for free. \nCall 581-4100 for reservations or more information.

SUMMARY:Brownie the Outlaw: Browntail Moth Research in Maine
DESCRIPTION:The Randy Alford Memorial Presentation\n“Brownie the Outlaw” was the title Dr. Edith Marion Patch gave more than a century ago to her story about the Browntail Moth caterpillar whose voracious appetite and toxic hairs were plaguing Maine residents at the time.  The insect has made a reappearance in Maine and seems to be working its way north\, defoliating trees and irritating humans’ sensitive skin as it goes.  Join University of Maine Entomology Professor Eleanor Groden and Forest Entomologist Charlene Donahue to learn how their current research is adding to our understanding of this insect pest and our capacity to monitor and control its impact on our state.
