The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs reports to the Vice President for Research. ORSP assists faculty and staff in seeking and managing research grants, contracts, and other extramural funding. ORSP office serves as applicant, contract negotiator, and signatory authority for the University in such matters, and provides grant accounting services once an award is made.

Michael Hastings is Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the University of Maine’s Authorized Institutional Representative. In this capacity, Director Hastings has the authority to submit applications or proposals, negotiate, execute, and otherwise obligate the University on the resulting grants, cooperative agreements, or contracts for sponsored projects.
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is organized into four functional areas:
- Pre-Award Services, managed by Debbie Carver, Assist. Director, Pre-Award Services;
- Post-Award and Fiscal Services; managed by Christopher Boynton, Assoc. Director for Post-Award Services;
- Research Integrity & Compliance, managed by Gayle Jones, Assist. Director for Research Integrity & Compliance; and
- Information Management Services, managed by Clifford Wilbur, Asst. Director for Information Management.
