Kreutz to serve as UArctic chair

Karl Kreutz, director of the University of Maine School of Earth and Climate Sciences and professor in the Climate Change Institute, has been selected as the University of the Arctic Chair in Arctic Ice, Climate and Environmental History.

University of the Arctic (UArctic) is a network of universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations concerned with education and research in and about the North, according to the organization’s website. Based in Finland, UArctic builds and strengthens collective resources and infrastructures that help member institutions to serve their constituents and their regions. 

UMaine is a UArctic institution, led by the Climate Change Institute.

In the five-year term as UArctic Chair in Arctic Ice, Climate and Environmental History, Kreutz will have a leadership role in helping develop educational and research opportunities between UMaine and UArctic.

Kreutz, a UArctic assembly representative, has been a member of the UMaine faculty since 2000. His research in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and the Climate Change Institute focuses on paleoclimate, glaciology and abrupt climate change. Current projects include high-resolution climate reconstructions in the Arctic, Antarctic and North Atlantic.
