Yates discusses $1.5 billion lithium deposit with Maine Monitor

The Maine Monitor interviewed Martin Yates about a $1.5 billion lithium deposit discovered outside of Newry. Yates, a laboratory manager and instructor for the School of Earth and Climate Sciences at the University of Maine, discussed regulations for open pit mining and the environmental issues surrounding the practice. “The call to restrict open pit mining — that’s the open sore in the face of the Earth argument,” Yates said. “Once you’ve opened a hole like that, it’s not really going to grow back.” The Bangor Daily News and Maine Public shared the story.
