The University of Maine at Machias will provide temporary housing for the new Town of Machias Police Chief: outgoing University of Maine Police Detective Sgt. Keith Mercier.

Detective Sgt. Mercier’s last day with the UMaine Police Department will be Oct. 31, concluding a more than decade-long career serving the university community. He joined the force on Dec. 27, 2010 as a patrol officer.

“Detective Mercier has dedicated himself to improving public safety and building a stronger community at the University of Maine for more than a decade,” says UMaine and UMaine Machias President Joan Ferrini-Mundy. “I congratulate him and the Town of Machias. We look forward to working with Chief Mercier and municipal leaders in Machias to strengthen engagement with our coastal campus and the many educational and enrichment opportunities available to everyone through the state’s public research and land grant university.”
