New Art Exhibit opens Oct. 5 at UMaine’s Hutchinson Center

A new exhibit exploring and processing COVID-19 and grief through art opens Oct. 5 at the H. Allen and Sally Fernald Art Gallery at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast. The exhibit, which is open through December, is free and open to the public from 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday–Friday.

The show features works by students from the Eddy Middle School in Newry, Maine, and contributors to the Treasure Trove Artistry Project. Eddy Middle School students translated metaphors about COVID-19 and masks into watercolor paintings using a negative space technique. Treasure Trove Artistry submissions include art created in response to poetry, a rhetorical device known as reverse ekphrasis.

The gallery will offer a free public reception from 1–3 p.m. on Oct. 17. For information or to request an accommodation, contact Abby Spooner, hutchinsoncenter@maine.edu.
