NOAA shares UMaine research findings from dam removal studies

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration cited several studies conducted by University of Maine faculty and students in reporting on changes in the lower Penobscot River ecosystem following the removal of two dams. The studies led by faculty in the School of Marine Sciences, the School of Biology and Ecology and the School of Earth and Climate Sciences gathered data before and after dam removal to assess the temperature and chemical condition of the river, channel geometry and bed sediment texture, impacts on connected wetlands and riparian habitats, fish passage and the larger aquatic ecosystem.
