NSRC backs UMaine researchers’ Northern Forest sustainability projects

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. University of Maine researchers received financial awards from the Northern States Research Cooperative (NSRC) to conduct projects that tackle issues communities in the Northern Forest are facing.

The funding that will support UMaine research endeavors derives from an overall $1.6 million investment from the NSRC for 13 projects across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. Benefactors include UMaine assistant professor of forest entomology Angela Mech, who will led the development of a browntail moth monitoring program, and Barbara Wheatland Geospatial Analysis Laboratory director Daniel Hayes, who will develop a spatially-and temporally-explicit carbon budget for the forest sector of the Northeastern states.

The organization also allocated an award to Laura Kenefic, a U.S. Forest Service research forester, so she can produce a new silvicultural guide for the northern conifer forest type with UMaine University Forests manager Keith Kanoti.

“The Northeastern State Research Cooperative has been an important source of regional research funding for the last two decades” said Aaron Weiskittel, director of the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests, which is a member of the NSRC. “We are very excited to announce this new set of projects, which all demonstrate an effective partnership between the U.S. Forest Service, regional stakeholders and applied researchers. We look forward to continuing to build this vital regional program in the years to come.”
