Press Herald recaps panel discussion of drought at agricultural trade show
The Portland Press Herald summarized comments from a panel discussion conducted at the 2021 Maine Agricultural Trade Show in January to help gardeners prepare for the upcoming gardening season. Sean Birkel, University of Maine research assistant professor and state climatologist; Rachel Schattman, assistant professor of sustainable agriculture; and John Jemison, Cooperative Extension soil and water quality specialist, suggested strategies to mitigate drought conditions ranging from adding rain barrels to constructing a farm pond and using mulch and cover crops.
