Hutchinson Center announces restorative practices certificate program

The University of Maine Hutchinson Center will offer a six-session program on restorative practices beginning Dec. 5 and 6. Other sessions will take place Jan. 10, Feb. 13 and 14, and March 13. All sessions are from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

The focus of the program is the restorative approach, which emphasizes the importance of creating a positive, healthy school climate based on empathy, trust and respect. Research-based restorative practices are used in several Maine schools, juvenile correction facilities and youth-serving organizations.

Professionals Carrie Sullivan and Sarah Matari will lead the program, which seeks to benefit participants from a variety of fields, including primary, secondary and post-secondary education; social work and family services; corrections; criminal justice and policing; nonprofit organizations; health care; and community development.

Cost is $600 per person for the six sessions and includes materials, a light breakfast and catered lunch. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.

Participants will receive a certificate in restorative practices and 4.2 continuing education units (CEUs)/42 contact hours upon completion of the program.
