March Against Domestic Violence on Oct. 2 on the Mall

The University of Maine’s sixth annual March Against Domestic Violence will begin at noon Wednesday, Oct. 2 on the Mall in front of Fogler Library.

The Maine Business School (MBS) Corps sponsors the march. Partners are Title IX Student Services, Student Life, UMaine Athletics, UMaine Army ROTC, Rising Tide Center, Partners for Peace, and other organizations.

Following the march, U.S. Rep. Jared Golden is scheduled to deliver remarks. Other scheduled speakers include Robert Dana, vice president for student life and dean of students at UMaine; Casey Faulkingham, community response team leader at Partners for Peace; representatives of several on-campus groups, including MBS Corps, Male Athletes Against Violence (MAAV) and UMaine Army ROTC; as well as members of the community who have been affected by domestic violence.

After the speakers, a moment of silence will be followed by the reading of names of people killed in 2018 and 2019 in Maine as a result of domestic violence. Flowers in remembrance of their lives will be placed on the library steps.

Last year’s march drew about 200 participants. Everyone is encouraged to attend and support the cause.

In the event of a downpour, the march will be suspended and speakers will share their thoughts at noon in the North Pod of Memorial Union. Follow #umaineMADV and #umainetakesaction on social media.
