Thomas Jefferson Scholarship student from Tunisia at UMaine
Khouloud Gaza, a third-year student majoring in mechatronics engineering at National School of Engineers of Sousse, has joined the University of Maine community for the academic year as part of the Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program of the U.S. Department of State’s Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program.
Gaza is the first student to study at UMaine under the Tunisia UGRAD program, designed to build the workforce capacity of a diverse group of youth leaders.
To gain hands-on experience in their fields of study, Tunisia UGRAD students participate in online career preparation activities in their fall semester and undertake professional internships in the community during their spring semester. Thomas Jefferson Scholars return to Tunisia with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be leaders and innovators in their fields, and contribute positively to Tunisia’s economic development.
The Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program’s Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program is sponsored by the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and implemented by the international nonprofit IREX. More information about the program is online.
