Steneck’s coral reef research cited in Dominican Republic newspaper

University of Maine oceanographer Robert Steneck’s research on coral reef health in the Dominican Republic was cited in an article in Diario Libre, a newspaper in the Caribbean country. Steneck and collaborators assessed the state of the island’s corals using indicators of reef health, including abundance of algal cover, adult corals, juvenile corals and parrotfish. According to the article, Steneck’s research has yielded “the most recent and comprehensive scientific report on the subject.” Last June on World Oceans Day, Steneck delivered a keynote address on coral reefs — which he calls the tropical rainforests of the sea — at a conference in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
