Historical Atlas of Maine wins top prize, MPBN reports

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported the Historical Atlas of Maine has received the 2016 American Association of Geographers Globe Book Award for Public Understanding of Geography. The atlas, the result of a 15-year scholarly project led by University of Maine researchers, offers a new geographical and historical interpretation of Maine, from the end of the last ice age to the year 2000. The folio-size volume was published by University of Maine Press, a division of UMaine’s Raymond H. Fogler Library. It was edited by UMaine historian Richard Judd and UMaine geographer Stephen Hornsby, with cartography by Michael Hermann. “It’s an enormous deal. It’s a great honor to get this award,” said Hornsby, director of UMaine’s Canadian-American Center. He told MPBN that the effort, which started in 1997, involved funding from the Legislature and the work of many to compile a richly illustrated atlas of Maine geographic history. The book was published in 2014, with a second printing last year, the report states.
