Biofuel Research Noted in Report on Old Town Mill

Biofuel research being done by UMaine engineers and researchers was noted in a story in the Bangor Daily News about the Old Town Fuel & Fiber mill in Old Town. The story, which focused on pollution issues at the facility, said UMaine, which is in the forefront of research on how to distill fuels from wood, is collaborating with the company on biobutanol research. The report also noted that the mill subcontracted part of the Energy Department grant to UMaine’s Forest Bioproducts Research Institute, and UMaine is building a 40,000-square-foot bioproducts technology center at the mill. Jake Ward, UMaine assistant vice president for research, economic development, and governmental relations, said in the story no one has raised the concern that air pollution rises to the level that the university shouldn’t collaborate with the mill.
