ORONO — In a show of appreciation for the University of Maine’s support of the equine industry, the Maine Farriers Association presented a cash donation to UMaine’s equine program on Dec. 10.

The association’s $1,500 donation was to thank the students, faculty and staff associated with the UMaine program for the partnership that has evolved between the organizations. That collaboration has brought UMaine resources to bear in helping the farriers group accomplish its goals relative to optimal horse care throughout Maine. The university also provides a place for the association to hold educational activities.

Farriers, otherwise known as horsehoers, are skilled technical artisans who use a combination of reshaping the hooves of horses and applying shoes to optimize stride and to correct lameness in horses of all kinds.

Farrier association members Kevin Oliver of Eddington and Brent Brown and Barton Patrick of Belfast presented a check to Nonni Daly, an Animal & Veterinary Science faculty member and event coordinator at the J.F. Witter Teaching and Research Center, and Robert Causey, a veterinarian who serves on the teaching faculty and is director of equine programs.
