WGME highlights UMaine research on important food source for baby lobsters

WGME featured University of Maine research looking at the connection between lobster larvae survival and Calanus finmarchicus, a tiny, calorie-rich zooplankton species that young lobsters prefer to eat. “The declines in the larvae that were surviving in parts of the gulf, and the declines we saw in the surviving larvae correlated pretty well to similar declines to Calanus finmarchicus,”said Alex Ascher, lead research scientist at Quahog Bay Conservancy, who began this work with UMaine as part of his Ph.D. thesis.
