WABI (Channel 5 in Bangor) interviewed Allison Gardner, associate professor of arthropod vector biology, and Griffin Dill, director of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab, for a story on cases of Powassan virus in the state. “It is an exceptionally rare illness, we see somewhere around three-to-five cases per year, but even that low number is relatively high for that region,” Dill said. Gardner said that early symptoms of Powassan are hard to spot for an early diagnosis. “You might see a fever, muscle soreness, flu-like symptoms that also tend to be the same as what you see in other tick-borne pathogens,” she said.
