They were not merely asking these stakeholders for information about what they do. They were asking lobsterman how they think about their role in collaborative research \u2013 if they think they have a role at all.<\/p>\n<p>A very different set of questions.<\/p>\n<p>Ebel, a PhD student in UMaine\u2019s Department of Anthropology, conducted the interviews with her advisor, <a href=\"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/anthropology\/faculty-staff\/dr-christine-beitl\/\">Christine Beitl<\/a>, Assistant Professor of Anthropology. They were part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/lobster-trap-bycatch\/\">yearlong study<\/a> funded by the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions, which focused on broadening the scope of the Mitchell Center\u2019s community-based mission.<\/p>\n<p>At the center of the research was the little-known cusk, a potentially endangered finfish species often caught accidentally as \u201cbycatch\u201d by lobster fishermen.
