SUMMARY:Talk - Gulf of Maine development: What can fishing teach us?
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be held virtually via Zoom and in-person at 107 Norman Smith Hall\, UMaine\, Orono. \n\nVirtual attendance: Complete the registration form for Zoom connection information\n\nSpeaker: Robin Alden\, former Director\, Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries \nUse conflicts are front and center in the Gulf of Maine as industrial-scale wind power and aquaculture development gain momentum and significant public and private investment. Looking more closely at fishing uses\, can we learn something from an aspirational industry that seeks to create value by operating within the Gulf’s changing ecology\, not just to use it as a place to do business? Robin Alden will explore the Gulf as a complex system and policy that could contribute to fishing forever. \nRobin Alden has been involved in fisheries since the early 1970s when she founded Commercial Fisheries News. She was a public member of New England Fishery Management Council\, was Maine Commissioner of Marine Resources in the first King Administration and co-founded the Maine Fishermen’s Forum and Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries\, which she led for 15 years. Retired since 2018\, she is writing about the last 50 years in New England’s fisheries. She has a BA in Economics from the University of Maine and lives in Stonington with her husband\, Ted Ames.
