SUMMARY:Talk - Collaborating Toward Climate Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be held virtually via Zoom and in-person at 107 Norman Smith Hall\, UMaine. A Career Q&A for UMaine students will follow the talk. \n\nVirtual attendance: Complete the registration form to receive Zoom connection information.\nIn-person attendance: Attendees must follow UMaine’s COVID-19 guidelines.\n\nSpeakers: Esperanza Stancioff\, Extension Professor\, UMaine Cooperative Extension & Maine Sea Grant and\nParker Gassett\, Marine Extension Associate\, Maine Sea Grant \nEsperanza and Parker will present on learnings from the Maine Climate Change Adaptation Providers Network (CCAP)\, and their experience in providing technical assistance for municipalities through the research effort Collaborating Toward Climate Solutions (CTCS). This presentation describes the current landscape of adaptation efforts throughout the state\, how some municipalities are working to interweave climate resilience into ongoing activities and departmental responsibilities\, and the resources and guidance available for local action. Please visit the CCAP website for more information on climate resilience in Maine https://extension.umaine.edu/climatesolutions/. \nEsperanza Stancioff is professor and climate change lead with University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Sea Grant and a member of the Marine Extension Team. Her work focuses on climate change adaptation research\, education\, and outreach in coastal communities and the development of statewide and regional partnership networks. Current projects include adaptation projects focused on understanding and reducing climate-related impacts\, including the Collaborating Toward Climate Solutions Project. She is the co-coordinator for Maine’s Climate Change Adaptation Providers Network (CCAP) working to support municipalities’ resilience efforts in partnership with state agencies and other organizations\, coordinator of the Maine Ocean Acidification Partnership(MOCA)\, steering committee member of the National Sea Grant Climate Network (NSGCN) and the Northeast Regional Coastal Acidification Network (NECAN)\, and is co-director of the community science program\, Signs of the Seasons: A New England Phenology Program (SOS). Esperanza has been engaged as a member of the Maine Climate Council Community Resilience Working Group leading to the development of Maine Won’t Wait Climate Action Plan\, which continues its work towards implementation of the plan. \nParker Gassett is a marine extension associate with Maine Sea Grant. His work helps to connect climate change science and technical support with coastal community leaders in Maine that are preparing for change. Parker is a steering committee member of the Maine Ocean and Coastal Acidification Partnership and the National Ocean Acidification Information Exchange. Since 2017 he has been a member of the Climate Change Adaptation Providers Network\, working to build climate change resilience through community based efforts throughout the State.
