SUMMARY:Seminar - Richard Merrick - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Marine Resource Management in a Changing Climate\nRichard Merrick\, NOAA \nSeminar: 3pm-4pm \nReception and informal discussion: 4pm-5pm \nDr. Merrick began serving as Director of Scientific Programs and Chief Science Advisor with NOAA Fisheries in 2011. In this capacity\, he leads efforts to provide the science needed to support sustainable fisheries and ecosystems and to continue the Nation’s progress in ending overfishing\, rebuilding fish populations\, saving critical species\, and preserving vital habitats. As the head of scientific operations\, Dr. Merrick directs NOAA’s six regional Fisheries Science Centers. He joined NOAA Fisheries in 1985 as a marine mammal staff scientist at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. In 1997\, he transferred to the Northeast Fisheries Science Center\, where he initially served as Branch Chief for Protected Species\, and then as Chief of the Resource Evaluation and Assessment Division. He has led various regional and national efforts to improve fishery and protected resources science\, and has broad experience in dealing with a wide variety of controversial fishery and protected species issues. Dr. Merrick’s holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries from the University of Washington; M.S. degrees in Biological Oceanography and in Marine Resource Management from Oregon State University; and an M.S. in City and Regional Planning from Clemson University. \nCo-sponsored by: School of Marine Sciences\, Maine Sea Grant\, Ecology and Environmental Sciences Program\, and Climate Change Institute

SUMMARY:Seminar - Chris Feurt
DESCRIPTION:Evolving Approaches to Collaborative Learning and Boundary Spanning in Sustainability Science \nChristine Feurt\, University of New England \nHow can busy researchers work with even busier managers to facilitate effective application of science to address complex environmental challenges? Sustainability science offers a framework for integrating the perspectives and expertise of interdisciplinary scientists and managers and focusing their collaborative efforts toward solutions. Success in these partnerships can be enhanced when a “boundary spanner” assumes the critical role of negotiating the gulf separating science and management. For over a decade the Wells NERR Coastal Training Program has used a Collaborative Learning approach to bridge science and management. This seminar examines the elements that contribute to the effectiveness of this approach and proposes an increased emphasis on building boundary spanning competencies and resources to address the challenges of sustainability science.

SUMMARY:Seminar - Cindy Isenhour
DESCRIPTION:Materials Management through Sustainable Consumption: Research\, Policy and Practice \nCindy Isenhour\, Dept. of Anthropology\, UMaine \nA significant body of research suggests that production efficiencies are unlikely to result in environmental improvements adequate to avoid “dangerous” climate change\, resource depletion\, and increasingly significant waste management issues. This is\, in part\, because rapidly growing levels of consumption are outpacing efficiency improvements globally (OECD 2008\, Jenkins et. al. 2011\, EEA 2014). These findings have increased awareness of and policy support for engaging communities in more effective materials management practices (EEA 2014). Emerging policies designed to support re-use and sharing economies reflect this growing recognition (Agyeman 2013\, Orsi 2013\, Oregon DEQ 2012\, EEA 2014). Dr. Isenhour’s seminar builds upon these findings and her own research to: 1) review recent efforts to measure the environmental impacts of consumption – and the economic\, social and environmental value of re-use economies; 2) outline a proposed research program designed to measure the economic\, ecological\, social and cultural value of Maine’s reuse economy; and 3) provide an overview of several existing policies that might be implemented in Maine to improve materials management and reduce emissions through sustainable consumption.

DESCRIPTION:Serpentine: Evolutionary Ecology of a Model System\nDr. Nishanta Rajakaruna\, College of the Atlantic \nSerpentine habitats are home to many rare and endemic species\, providing model settings for studies in ecology\, evolution\, and conservation. The presentation summarizes current research on serpentine plant-habitat relations in North America and explores how adaptation to serpentine and other extreme edaphic settings has set the stage for population differentiation and speciation in the California flora \nFor information: Dulcinea Groff.  Sponsored by School of Biology and Ecology as part of the 2015 Spring Seminar Series

SUMMARY:Seminar - John Hagan
DESCRIPTION:John Hagan\, President\, Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences \nThe science of when science doesn’t matter (and what to do about it) \nWhy does society make such painfully slow progress on issues that have such huge consequences\, like climate change?  The science seems so overwhelming.  But until most of society participates\, problems this big won’t be solved.  Conservatives\, liberals\, North\, South\, urban\, rural\, religious\, areligious\, etc.\, etc.\, will all need to participate.  Activating this diverse cross section is going to require a fundamentally new approach to problem solving.

SUMMARY:Seminar - Brian McGill
DESCRIPTION:Decision Support Systems and Stakeholder Engagement \nBrian McGill\, School of Biology & Ecology and Senator George J. Mitchell Center \nDecision Support Systems (DSS) provide computer based information and analysis to aid decision-making. DSS has been a common tool in industry for decades. This seminar will survey ways in which DSS can be used in sustainability solutions and describes and demonstrates a specific application under construction by a team in the Mitchell Center.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Sam Hanes & Brianne Du Clos
DESCRIPTION:How Maine Blueberry Growers Use Wild Bees: Learning from a Sustainability Transition in Progress \nSam Hanes and Brianne Du Clos\, University of Maine \nHoneybees are the backbone of U.S. crop pollination but their numbers have been declining since 1960. Our project looks at why Maine blueberry growers pollinate their crop as they do\, with particular attention to their use of wild bees as a supplement or alternative to honeybees. What are some of the obstacles they encounter when they try to use and conserve wild bees and what can be done to help growers who want to diversify their pollination sources? \nSee more on this research…

SUMMARY:Seminar - Michael Cox
DESCRIPTION:Synthesizing theories of environmental governance\nMichael Cox\, Dartmouth \nNormal science involves the interaction between theory and observation. Theories entail observational patterns\, and these patterns have implications for the acceptance or rejection of theories. This characterization of science implies the presence of a body of theory\, or set of theoretical statements\, that is adjusted and distilled over time within each scientific field. For the field of environmental social science (and other related disciplines that explore human-environment interactions)\, this body largely lives in the minds of researchers and practitioners. Historically there has not existed a set of materials that codifies important social and ecological concepts and the theories that relate these concepts in order to codify the state of scientific knowledge. The primary focus of this talk will be an effort to conduct this synthetic codification\, known as the Social-ecological systems meta-analysis database (SESMAD) project.

SUMMARY:Seminar - Carol Toner
DESCRIPTION:Making Sense of Place in Maine: Sustainability Insights from the Humanities\nCarol Toner\, Maine Studies Director \n“In times of climate change and threats to our environment\, the more we know about place the more we may empathize with the place and attempt to protect it.” Yi Fu Tuan \nWhat do we mean by a sense of place and why does it matter? How does place inform our understanding of Maine’s history and environment? This presentation explores place in Maine and finds that places have multiple voices and multiple meanings. Drawing upon sources from literature\, history\, folklore\, Native American studies\, geography and other disciplines\, this presentation considers how we might integrate a sense of place into teaching and studying Maine.
