SUMMARY:Seminar: Bobbi Peckarsky
DESCRIPTION:Potential effects of climate change on stream organisms\nBobbi Peckarsky\, University of Wisconsin-Madison \nCo-sponsors: Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions\, School of Biology & Ecology \nWhile increasing temperatures have received much focus of the effects of climate change\, associated increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme events\, such as droughts and floods\, may have important consequences for stream organisms. Investigators at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory are investigating the potential for those events to negatively affect plants\, insects and trout in high elevation streams of western Colorado\, USA. Disruption of the natural flow regime via climate change could jeopardize the sustainability of otherwise pristine mountain streams.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Nicholas Giudice
DESCRIPTION:Using virtual reality as a tool for improving wind energy visualization \nNicholas Giudice\, School of Computing and Information Science \nDr Giudice will discuss the use of virtual reality as a tool for improving wind energy visualization. The seminar will explore the progress of one of SSI’s Emerging Opportunities projects led by Nicholas Giudice\, School of Computing & Information Science in collaboration with Mario Teisl\, School of Economics\, Caroline Noblet\, School of Economics\, and Shannon McCoy\, Dept. of Psychology. \nDr. Giudice is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering at UMaine and the Director of the Virtual Environment and Multimodal Interaction (VEMI) Laboratory. His research combines expertise in perception\, cognitive neuroscience and human factors engineering using an integrative approach he calls neurocognitive engineering. One line of studies investigates functional equivalence and multimodal spatial cognition: how we learn\, represent\, and act in space using different input modalities (visual\, tactile\, 3-D audio\, and spatial language).

SUMMARY:Black Ash Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Sharing Traditional and Scientific Knowledge \nRegistration is now open for the Black Ash Symposium to be held at the University of Maine November 5th – 7th\, 2014. \nThe unifying theme of the symposium will focus on the biology and ecology of black ash throughout North America. We will be bringing together researchers\, state and national agencies\, students\, and tribal members to update our knowledge on a rare and rarely studied species whose populations are threatened by the emerald ash borer. By highlighting what we know\, we will be able to clarify what important knowledge is needed to manage and sustain black ash in the landscape. \nThe event will be held at the Buchanan Alumni House (November 5th) and the George J. Mitchell Sustainability Center (November 7th) on the University of Maine campus. We will spend Thursday out in the field visiting local black ash stands in Maine. \nIf you would like to register for the symposium\, please complete the registration form below no later than Monday\, October 13th\, 2014. \nRegistration form \nIf you have any questions\, please contact:\nKara Lorion

SUMMARY:Seminar: Yong Chen\, Christine Beitl
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research for Understanding Bycatch in the Maine Lobster Fishery \nYong Chen and Christine Beitl\nSchool of Marine Sciences\, Dept. of Anthropology\, University of Maine \nIn this seminar\, Chen and Beitl will discuss their research on bycatch\, the incidental catch of non-target species\, which represents both an ecological and social problem in fisheries management. The decision of fishers to keep or discard bycatch caught in a targeted fishery is based on a fisher’s knowledge\, understanding\, and attitudes about the non-targeted species and their perceived insights about potential survivability of discarded fish. Bycatch is a widespread problem in fisheries management and its causes are complicated. The team will discuss their cooperative approach involving the participation of practitioners\, policy makers\, NGOs\, and fishers.

SUMMARY:Seminar - Richard Merrick - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Marine Resource Management in a Changing Climate\nRichard Merrick\, NOAA \nSeminar: 3pm-4pm \nReception and informal discussion: 4pm-5pm \nDr. Merrick began serving as Director of Scientific Programs and Chief Science Advisor with NOAA Fisheries in 2011. In this capacity\, he leads efforts to provide the science needed to support sustainable fisheries and ecosystems and to continue the Nation’s progress in ending overfishing\, rebuilding fish populations\, saving critical species\, and preserving vital habitats. As the head of scientific operations\, Dr. Merrick directs NOAA’s six regional Fisheries Science Centers. He joined NOAA Fisheries in 1985 as a marine mammal staff scientist at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. In 1997\, he transferred to the Northeast Fisheries Science Center\, where he initially served as Branch Chief for Protected Species\, and then as Chief of the Resource Evaluation and Assessment Division. He has led various regional and national efforts to improve fishery and protected resources science\, and has broad experience in dealing with a wide variety of controversial fishery and protected species issues. Dr. Merrick’s holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries from the University of Washington; M.S. degrees in Biological Oceanography and in Marine Resource Management from Oregon State University; and an M.S. in City and Regional Planning from Clemson University. \nCo-sponsored by: School of Marine Sciences\, Maine Sea Grant\, Ecology and Environmental Sciences Program\, and Climate Change Institute

SUMMARY:Seminar - Chris Feurt
DESCRIPTION:Evolving Approaches to Collaborative Learning and Boundary Spanning in Sustainability Science \nChristine Feurt\, University of New England \nHow can busy researchers work with even busier managers to facilitate effective application of science to address complex environmental challenges? Sustainability science offers a framework for integrating the perspectives and expertise of interdisciplinary scientists and managers and focusing their collaborative efforts toward solutions. Success in these partnerships can be enhanced when a “boundary spanner” assumes the critical role of negotiating the gulf separating science and management. For over a decade the Wells NERR Coastal Training Program has used a Collaborative Learning approach to bridge science and management. This seminar examines the elements that contribute to the effectiveness of this approach and proposes an increased emphasis on building boundary spanning competencies and resources to address the challenges of sustainability science.
