SUMMARY:SSI SEMINAR - From Science to Solutions with Andrew Gonzales
DESCRIPTION:From Science to Solutions: Biodiversity Research for Global Environmental Change \nAndrew Gonzalez\, McGill University \nGonzales will present results from the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science’s research on biodiversity and ecological networks. Presented first will be some key theoretical principles from metacommunity ecology that can guide the management of landscapes for biodiversity despite uncertainty. He will build on this background to describe a project focused on designing an ecological network for the city of Montreal. The Centre’s approach emphasizes landscape configuration as a key parameter that can be tuned to suggest alternatives that maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services whilst being resilient to ongoing land use change and climate change over the coming century. \nDr. Andrew Gonzalez is Professor in Department of Biology\, McGill University\, and the founding Director of the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science. His research is focused on the causes and consequences of biodiversity change\, a theme he explores using a range of theoretical and experimental approaches.

SUMMARY:"Sustainable Maine" Culvert Operations
DESCRIPTION:Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) rebroadcast of Sustainable Maine episode: Culvert Operations \nExtreme weather costs Maine communities millions of dollars in damage\, and many experts predict that it’s likely to get worse. Some communities are finding out the hard way that their culverts are no longer big enough to handle the increasing size of floods. It’s estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of culverts in Maine\, ranging from small drainages under driveways to moose-size culverts under major highways to keep streams and wildlife moving. Failed culverts can disrupt lives and commerce\, threaten fragile ecosystems\, and quickly swamp municipal budgets. ’Culvert Operations’ shows how one research team is working with communities to plan for future extreme weather events. \nSee your local television provider for listings.

SUMMARY:The Saco Science Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Does the documented biological diversity of the Saco estuary deserve recognition as a critical natural area in the State of Maine?  Five years of intense research suggests yes. As part of the Maine Sustainability Solutions Initiative\, researchers and the Stewardship Network active in the region\, learned about the estuary’s ecosystem health and how people benefit from this special place. Please join the research team and members of the Stewardship Network for a conversation about how these scientific findings can be used to protect what people value most about the estuary. \nDownload Agenda (pdf)

SUMMARY:Baskets\, Beetles and the Future
DESCRIPTION:The potential arrival of the emerald ash borer in Maine threatens ash trees that are central to Wabanaki basket making and ways of life. But students and faculty from the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions are working with basket makers\, tribal communities\, state and federal government\, the forest products industry\, and many others to prepare for this environmental\, cultural and economic challenge. \nProfessors David Hart and Darren Ranco will discuss how this innovative partnership is blending indigenous knowledge and Western science to combat such challenges and strengthen community resilience.

SUMMARY:8th Annual Drinking Water Protection Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Letting People In and Keeping Contaminants Out \nPublic water supplies often exist in the same areas that people find desirable for recreation and development\, while also providing a natural habitat for plants and animals. This seminar emphasizes how coexisting with sometimes opposing values and missions can provide challenges for public water suppliers in striking the right balance for protection of a valuable and necessary resource with those who want to use the land for other things.
