Daigle quoted in Maine Monitor story on emerald ash borer

John Daigle, UMaine professor of forest recreation management and Mitchell Center faculty fellow, was quoted in a story by the Maine Monitor on proposed changes to management tactics for the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect that threatens ash trees across the country. It was first found in Maine in 2018 and has spread to several counties.

The insect is of particular concern to Wabanaki tribes and basketmakers, who rely on brown ash (Fraxinus nigra) to make Indian ash splint and sweetgrass baskets, the oldest documented arts tradition in New England.

John is a tribal member of the Penobscot Indian Nation and a team member on the Mitchell Center project, Mobilizing to Fight the Emerald Ash Borer.
