Dominique DiSpirito named as finalist for Truman Scholarship

Dominique DiSpirito, a political science major and Honors College student at UMaine who joined the Mitchell Center’s food waste solutions team in October, was recently named as a finalist for the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to juniors pursuing public service careers and based on their community service, leadership experience and potential, and academic abilities.

The food waste solutions team is led by Susanne Lee and is part of the Mitchell Center’s Materials Management research efforts. The team’s work focuses on developing “triple bottom line” solutions to food waste challenges that have economic, environmental, and social benefits. Student interns on the team—all undergraduates—actively work with faculty and community stakeholders to identify problems and pursue solutions.  Dominique has helped launch two of the team’s food waste pilot projects.
