Former Administrator, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Dr. Jane Lubchenco, an extraordinary marine ecologist and environmental scientist, has received a MacArthur “genius” award and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. The scientific journal Nature named her “Newsmaker of the Year”.
In 2008, she was nominated by President Obama to serve as the first woman administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Under her leadership, NOAA focused on “restoring fisheries to sustainability and profitability, restoring oceans and coasts to a healthy state, developing a Weather-Ready Nation, strengthening science and ensuring scientific integrity.”
Dr. Lubchenco returned to Oregon State University in 2013, where she is the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology. Her research interests include biodiversity, climate change, sustainability science, and the state of the oceans.
