This roundtable event brings three nationally recognized University of Maine scholars together to discuss the process of planning, researching, and composing their new books, and how they were able to gain the interest of the publishers who eventually supported and published their projects. The event will take place on December 2, 2021, at 3 p.m. ET in Arthur St. John Hill Auditorium in Barrows Hall, and <a href=\"https:\/\/maine.zoom.us\/j\/89895586146?pwd=ZUpkUDFLT08wcHFqSFA5WTRJWGxVZz09\">virtually via Zoom<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Professor of Political Science <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Amy Fried\u2019<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">s new (co-authored) book, titled <\/span><strong><em><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">At War with Government: How Conservatives Weaponized Distrust from Goldwater to Trump<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">, was published by Columbia University Press, Professor of English <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Margo Lukens<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">\u2019s new (co-authored) book, titled <\/span><em><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">&#8220;Still They Remember Me&#8221; Penobscot Transformer Tales, Volume 1<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">, was published by University of Massachusetts Press, and Professor Emeritus of Sociology <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Kyriacos Markides<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">\u2019s new book, titled <\/span><strong><em><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">The Accidental Immigrant: A Quest for Spirit in a Skeptical Age<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">, was published by Hamilton Books. All three books appeared this year (2021), and all three authors employed tools drawn from the humanities \u2013 historical inquiry, thoughtful reflection, and understandings of perspective and connection \u2013 to develop their ideas and complete their projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The event is part of the <span class=\"JsGRdQ\">McGillicuddy Humanities Center\u2019s 2021-2022 Annual Symposium: <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">\u201cHumanities: Impact in Real Life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>PARTICIPANT BIOGRAPHIES<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/polisci\/faculty-and-staff\/amy-fried\/\"><b>Amy Fried<\/b><\/a>\u00a0is John Mitchell Nickerson Professor of Political Science at the University of Maine. She is the author of\u00a0<i>Muffled Echoes: Oliver North and the Politics of Public<\/i>\u00a0Opinion (Columbia, 1997) and<i>\u00a0Pathways to Polling: Crisis, Cooperation, and the Making of Public Opinion Professions<\/i>\u00a0(2012).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/english.umaine.edu\/people\/margo-lukens\/\"><b>Margo Lukens<\/b><\/a>\u00a0is a scholar of Native American literature who has long collaborated with the Penobscot nation.\u00a0 She is a Professor of English at the University of Maine, and the former Director of the McGillicuddy Humanities Center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/sociology\/faculty-and-staff\/kyriacos-markides\/\"><b>Kyriacos Markides<\/b><\/a>, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Maine, has written several books on Christian mysticism for academic publishers including Yale University Press, and trade publishers like Doubleday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7059\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/276\/2021\/11\/ReachingReaders-HZ-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Understanding how best to make a topic, subject or theme relevant to non-specialized audiences is a skill that takes years to master.
