Mandated by the Irish state beginning in the eighteenth century, they were operated by various orders of the Catholic Church until the last laundry closed in 1996. In 1993, a public scandal was triggered when the remains of 155 inmates, buried in unmarked graves on the property, were exhumed, cremated, and buried elsewhere in a mass grave.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the Magdalene Laundries check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/books-afterlife-irelands-magdalene-laundries-academic-advocacy-restorative-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lecture by expert\u00a0James Smith<\/a>, who will give a talk March 7th at UMaine.\u00a0Organized by the Stephen E.
