Krukowski will also be visiting CMJ 237: Journalism Across Platforms\u00a0<span>on Thursday<\/span>\u00a0and ENG 408: Advanced Poetry Workshop\u00a0<span>on Friday<\/span>. A catered lunch in the Wicks Room is scheduled for\u00a0<span>Friday<\/span>\u00a0from noon to 2pm; the topic of discussion is \u201cNegative Capabilities, Cage, noise and poetry.\u201d If you\u2019re interested in attending the lunch-time discussion please RSVP to <a href=\"mailto:english.chair@maine.edu\">english.chair@maine.edu<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<span>Wednesday (Septemeber 27th)<\/span>\u00a0at\u00a0<span>4:30pm<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Damon Krukowski: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recording technologies can become outdated or obsolescent, but does sound itself have an age? If so, what does it sound <em>like<\/em>? How do we hear \u201cage\u201d in the temporal medium of sound recording? We may assume that the \u201cAnalog Age\u201d is gone for good, replaced by the \u201cDigital Age,\u201d but in his new book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-ca-jc-the-new-analog-20170413-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New Analog: Listening and Reconnecting in a Digital World<\/a>, <\/em>and podcast <em>Ways of Hearing <\/em>hosted by Radiotopia author and musician Damon Krukowski takes this assumption back to basics to build a thought-provoking argument asserting the necessity of \u201cnoise.\u201d Krukowski helps us understand how recording technologies can have a huge impact on we are and are <em>not<\/em> hearing in our world.<\/p>\n<p>Damon Krukowski is the author of <em>The New Analog: Listening and Reconnecting in the Digital World, <\/em>which Alex Ross called \u201ca radical defense of analog craft in the face of the digital hard sell.\u201d <em>The Kirkus Review<\/em> said that \u201cKrukowski turns the basic dichotomy of audio engineering, the ratio of signal to noise, into a complex metaphor for the loss of history and ingenuity represented by the replacement of analog recording and culture with digital media.\u201d Krukowski\u2019s six-part podcast, <em>Ways of Hearing, <\/em>went live on Radiotopia\u2019s Showcase on August 4. Krukowski was in the indie rock band Galaxie 500 and is currently one half of the folk-rock duo Damon &amp; Naomi. He has written for <em>Pitchfork<\/em>, <em>Artforum<\/em>, <em>Bookforum<\/em>, <em>Frieze<\/em>, <em>The Wire<\/em>, and on his blog\u00a0<em>International Sad Hits<\/em>.
