Panelists included UMaine\u2019s Zach Ludington, Carla Billitteri, Michael Lang, andCarlos Villacorta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JAHAN RAMAZANI is Edgar F.&nbsp;Shannon Professor and University Professor of English at the University of Virginia. He is a distinguished scholar of modern and contemporary poetry in English, especially with regards to questions of postcolonialism and globalization. His books include&nbsp;<em>Poetry and Its Others: News, Prayer, Song, and the Dialogue of Genres<\/em>&nbsp;(U Chicago Press, 2013),&nbsp;<em>A Transnational Poetics<\/em>&nbsp;(U Chicago Press, 2009), and&nbsp;<em>The Hybrid Muse: Postcolonial Poetry in English<\/em>&nbsp;(U Chicago Press, 2001 ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Ramazani has lectured widely and received many important awards and honors, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Professor Ramazani will lead a panel discussion centered on his article, \u201c\u2018Cosmopolitan Sympathies\u2019: Poetry of the First Global War.\u201d Modernism\/modernity 23.4 November 1918 Armistice to the June 1919 Treaty of Versailles and beyond, the \u201cwar to end wars\u201d was coming to an end.&nbsp; During the 2018-2019 academic year, McGillicuddy Humanities Center will sponsor events exploring the legacy of WWI\u2019s complicated conclusion.&nbsp; Courses, public lectures, films and arts events will provide campus and community audiences ways to understand the wide-ranging impacts of the Great War on the world today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The McGillicuddy Humanities Center at UMaine will continue to host on-campus and outside speakers and events on the lasting impact of World War I through the spring semester, 2019. His writing includes over 50 articles and 15 books in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Zillman\u2019s teaching career began at the Army Judge Advocate Generals\u2019 School in Charlottesville, Virginia. On leaving active duty, he joined the faculty of Arizona State University School of Law where he was awarded tenure and promotion to full professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over three decades, Professor Zillman has been a member of the International Bar Association\u2019s Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure Law and an active participant in the Section\u2019s Academic Advisory Group (AAG). The AAG collaborated with Oxford University Press to publish a biennial study of major developments in the energy and environmental fields. He served as Lead Editor and author of Human Rights in Natural Resource Developments (2002), Beyond the Carbon Economy (2008), The Law of Energy Underground (2014), and Innovation in Energy Law and Technology (2018). Professor Sherry delivered a lecture on \u201cModernism in Wartime: Avant- Gardes, Revolutions, Poetries\u201d in the Hill Auditorium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sherry\u2019s visit to Orono coincided almost exactly with the 100th anniversary of the Armistice formally ending the hostilities of the first global war. . Sherry\u2019s eminence in the field of modernist literature, especially in the context of World War I, made his visit both timely and significant to the University and surrounding community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sherry is Howard Nemerov Professor in the Humanities and Chair of the English Department at Washington University in St. Louis and&nbsp;is an expert in the literature and history of the First World War, especially modern British and Irish literature. As author and editor, he has published many books, including&nbsp;<em>Modernism and the Reinvention of Decadence<\/em>&nbsp;(Cambridge University Press, 2015), the&nbsp;<em>Cambridge History of Modernism<\/em>&nbsp;(Cambridge University Press, 2017), and&nbsp;<em>The Great War and the Language of Modernism<\/em>&nbsp;(Oxford University Press, 2003). His upcoming book,&nbsp;<em>A Literary History of the European War of 1914-1918<\/em>&nbsp;is under contract with Princeton University
