\n\"1974_Joni_Mitchell\"\u00a0Joni Mitchell Tribute Concert<\/em><\/strong>
\nHaving organized an annual Women Composers\u00a0concert for over twenty years, Pianist and Music Education coordinator Laura Artesani decided that, for 2018, she\u2019d pull out all the stops and plan something really special: A tribute concert in honor of nine-time Grammy\u00a0award winner and beloved cultural icon\u00a0Joni Mitchell<\/a>. This swank event featured the added glamour of performances by singer-songwriter and UMaine alum\u00a0Sara\u00a0Hallie Richardson<\/a>.\u00a0Mark Tipton<\/a>, director of the University of Maine Jazz Ensemble, arranged some of Mitchell\u2019s songs for Richardson.\u00a0Dan Sonenberg<\/a>, USM professor and Joni\u00a0Mitchell expert (he wrote his dissertation on the Canadian legend) enlightened us with a\u00a0pre-concert lecture. Vocal groups\u00a0Euphony<\/a>, the\u00a0Maine Steiners<\/a>, and\u00a0Renaissance<\/a>\u00a0also performed. The tribute took place November 13, 2018 in Minsky Recital Hall, truly a moving and memorable evening.<\/p>\n

Ryan Dippre<\/a>\u00a0(English, Director of College Composition)<\/strong>
\n\"womanThe History of Writing\u00a0<\/em>Instruction at UMaine<\/em><\/strong>
\nThis is the third time we\u2019ve awarded a grant to\u00a0Writing Studies<\/a>\u00a0scholar Ryan Dippre. Why,\u00a0you may ask? Well, we can\u2019t help it. He keeps doing great work and making reasonable\u00a0requests! He\u2019ll be using this grant to give a presentation at the Council of Writing Program\u00a0Administrators\u2019 2018 Annual Conference. His topic: a study of how we\u2019ve been teaching\u00a0college composition at the University of Maine for the past fifty years. Turns out, we\u2019re\u00a0pretty good at it, so good in fact that in 2017 UMaine\u2019s College Composition program was\u00a0awarded a Writing Program \u201cCertificate of Excellence<\/a>\u201d from the Conference on College\u00a0Composition and Communication. Dippre\u2019s talk, titled \u201cIncremental, Lasting Change:\u00a0Transforming the Story of Writing at UMaine across the Decades,\u201d shares the rich\u00a0history of writing instruction at UMaine with leaders in the field. What\u2019s not to support?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Elizabeth Downing<\/a>\u00a0(Music, Flute Instructor)<\/strong>
\n\"Elizabeth\u00a0 Woodwind Duet Performance<\/em><\/strong>
\nWith the help of an MHC grant, flutist Downing traveled to Ostend, Belgium to\u00a0perform as part of\u00a0Clarinet Fest 2018<\/a>. There she will was joined by clarinetist and composer\u00a0Beth Wiemann<\/a>\u00a0(who also just happens to be the head of the Music department at UMaine)\u00a0as part of a duet. Downing and Wiemann performed\u00a0David Feurzeig<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Bagatelles for clarinet and flute, a work these woodwind players regionally premiered in\u00a0February 2017. Since last year, Feurzeig\u2019s has revised Bagatelles in response to input from\u00a0Wiemann and Downing, so the Belgium performance was a new version of this\u00a0composition. The international music scene recognizes that UMaine\u2019s musicians are world\u00a0class.<\/p>\n

Michael Grillo<\/a>\u00a0(Art History)<\/strong>
\n\"Giottino\u2019s\u00a0The Epistemology of Connoisseurship: Questions on\u00a0Giottino\u2019s Uffizi \u201cLamentation\u201d
\n<\/em><\/strong>Humanists love a mystery\u2014that moment when the evidence doesn\u2019t sit right, and you lie awake puzzling out possible explanations. Concerning some troubling assertions about a\u00a0gorgeous painting titled \u201cLamentation\u201d\u2014housed in the\u00a0Uffizi<\/a>\u00a0in Florence\u2014\u00a0art historian and MHC faculty board member Michael Grillo is on the case. Does \u201cLamentation\u201d date from\u00a0the Trecento (14th century)? Or was it restored to look as though it does? Is it the work of Giottino? Or someone else? Who was behind what Grillo identifies as this work\u2019s\u00a0notable delicacy of line and the emotional expressiveness of its figures? Its almost photographic optical devices and tableaux vivant-like staging? In short, its Victorian-era\u00a0feel? Did restoration alter the original in keeping with later aesthetics? Questions such as these take some serious archive digging and a trained eye to answer. Thus, with the help\u00a0of an MHC grant, Grillo will travel to Italy to continue his detective work on the haunting\u00a0mystery that is \u201cLamentation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nancy Ogle<\/a>\u00a0(Music, Voice)<\/strong>
\n\"Mosaic\u00a0 Staged Reading of Aristophanes\u2019<\/em><\/strong>\u201cPlutus\u201d<\/em><\/strong>
\nIn collaboration with the Honors College and the Department of Philosophy, Professor of\u00a0music, voice, and opera Nancy Ogle has organized a public reading of\u00a0Aristophanes<\/a>\u2019\u00a0\u201cPlutus,\u201d an\u00a0immensely popular work in its day about the god of wealth. Students in the School of\u00a0Performing Arts’ Opera Workshop participated in the chorus, always so\u00a0consequential in Greek drama. This event took place on October 17, 2018. The\u00a0following day (October 18), Wycliffe College (University of Toronto) philosophy professor\u00a0David\u00a0Butorac<\/a>\u2014an expert on \u201cPlutus\u201d\u2014gave a talk in the\u00a0Philosophy Department\u2019s<\/a> colloquium\u00a0series. When Humanists work together across disciplines, our shared cultural past comes to\u00a0life.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/em>Thanks to funding from MHC, as well as the Cultural Affairs \u201cDistinguished Lecture Series,\u201d\u00a0and the School of Performing Arts, the acclaimed Welsh baritone\u00a0Jeremy Huw Williams<\/a>,\u00a0who sings with \u201cmoving dramatic import\u201d according to The Herald<\/em>, added a stop at\u00a0the University of Maine to his East Coast tour.
