He was a staff psychiatrist in the Department of Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Boston. Viewing the experiences of combat veterans from perspectives found in Homer\u2019s Iliad and Odyssey led him to write\u00a0<em>Achilles in Vietnam<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Odysseus in America<\/em>. He is a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation \u201cGenius Grant\u201d and has held varied positions at the US Naval War College, Office of the US Army, and the US Army War College.
