The Meaty Mind: Eating and Thinking in Early Christian Monasticism

The University of Maine History Department’s 2022-2023 symposium series will hold its next meeting on Monday, March 20th at 3:15pm in Soderberg Auditorium (Jenness Hall). Dr. Jamie Kreiner (University of Georgia) will be speaking about “The Meaty Mind: Eating and Thinking in Early Christian Monasticism.”

The History Department Symposium Series, “History through Food & Drink,” is supported in part by a grant from the Cultural Affairs/Distinguished Lecture Series Fund.

Dr. Jamie Kreiner is Professor of History at the University of Georgia, and her research examines the politics, ethics, and scientific sensibilities of the early Middle Ages. Her work has been awarded prizes from multiple professional academic societies; and it has been covered in a range of popular press outlets, including People, WIRED, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Her most recent book, The Wandering Mind: What Medieval Monks Tell Us About Distraction, was published by Liveright/Norton in January 2023; it can be found at your favorite independent bookstore.
