SUMMARY:The Epidemic of Elder Isolation and Loneliness Accompanying COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Lenard W. Kaye\, D.S.W.\, Ph.D.\, Director\, UMaine Center on Aging\, Professor\, UMaine School of Social Work\nClifford Milo Singer\, MD\, DFAPA\, AGSF\, Chief of Geriatric Mental Health and Neuropsychiatry at Acadia Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center \nAbout the Seminar: This seminar will consider the unprecedented negative impacts that COVID-19 has had on older adult well-being especially from social\, psychological\, and behavioral perspectives. Special emphasis will be placed on resultant increases in the risk of older adults experiencing social isolation and loneliness during the pandemic as well as other conditions that have served to further threaten elder health\, safety\, and quality of life. Strategies for preventing and even reversing the potentially lethal consequences of older adults living isolated and lonely lives will be considered. \nAbout the Speakers:   \nDr. Lenard W. Kaye is Professor of Social Work at the University of Maine School of Social Work and Director of the University of Maine Center on Aging. \nA prolific writer in the field of health care and aging\, he has published approximately 200 journal articles and book chapters and 17 books on specialized topics in aging including social isolation\, home health care\, productive aging\, rural practice\, family caregiving\, controversial issues in aging\, support groups for older women\, and congregate housing. His pioneering research and writing on older men’s caregiving experiences and help-seeking behaviors\, is widely recognized and frequently cited. His recent books include Social Isolation of Older Adults: Strategies to Bolster Health and Well-Being\, Springer Publishing Company (2019) and  the Handbook of Rural Aging\, Routledge\, Taylor & Francis Group (2021). \nHe is a current Co-Principal Investigator of The Mayer-Rothschild Foundation Designation of Excellence in Person-Centered Long-Term Care and the Lead Evaluator of AgingME\, Maine’s Geriatrics Workforce Development Project. He is a Past President of both the Maine and New York State Gerontological Societies and sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work and Journal of Aging Life Care\, and is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America \nDr. Cliff Singer is a psychiatrist and geriatrician\, having done residency and fellowships at Oregon Health and Science University and the Portland OR VAMC. He served as faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology for many years at Oregon Health and Science University and the University of Vermont. He is now Chief of Geriatric Mental Health and Neuropsychiatry at Northern Light Acadia Hospital in Bangor\, Maine and Research Professor at the University of Maine. He leads a multidisciplinary team at the Mood and Memory Clinic at Acadia Hospital and the Northern Light Acadia and Eastern Maine Medical Center Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical Trials Program. \nThe event is free but registration is required.
