Position Opening: Accurate and Real-Time Voice Simulator for Voice Disorders

Laboratory: Complex Flow Modeling and Simulation Laboratory

Faculty: Qian Xue

Opening Type: Two PhD/MS Students

Topics: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Flow-Tissue Interaction, Reduced-Order Modeling, Voice Production

Description: Professor Qian Xue is seeking two motivated students interested in pursuing a PhD/MS degree for a project entitled “Development of an Accurate and Real-Time Voice Simulator for Voice Disorders.” The students will work on developing a reduced-order flow model to simulate glottal aerodynamics in various irregular glottal configurations characterized by severely curved, asymmetric and multiple-flow-channel shapes. They will also need to couple the flow model with an existing structural model to realize flow-structure interactions. The long-term goal is to develop a simulation-aided surgical planning tool that can predict/estimate the outcomes of surgery interventions that affect vocal fold vibrations.

Required:

  • BS or MS degree in mechanical engineering or related major
  • Good knowledge of fluid mechanics
  • Strong modeling and simulation skills
  • Good writing and communication skills in English

Please send the detailed CV, copy of transcript, sample publications, transcripts of BS and/or MS studies and three reference to qian.xue@maine.edu
