Maine Writing Project

Program of Study

Master’s Candidates will earn 33 graduate credits that include at least two seminars. Ed.S. candidates will earn a minimum of 30 graduate credits beyond a master’s degree.

Applications for this cohort are currently being accepted. Please apply to the University of Maine Graduate School and contact Rich Kent. Use these Program of Studies Guides which must be filed with your advisor within the first year of program.

Required Courses – 18 Credits

  • ERL 541 – Writing and the Teaching of Writing (online, semester, 3 credits) or ERL 540 – Writing in Schools and Colleges (on campus, semester, 3 credits)
  • ERL 544 – Digital Writing in Classrooms (online, semester, 3 credits)
  • ERL 590 – Selected Seminar*
  • ERL 590 – Selected Seminar*
  • EDG 657 – Writing Practicum (online, semester, 3 credits)
  • EDU 580 – Northeast Writing Institute (on campus, 1 week, 3 credits)

Elective Courses –  up to 15 Credits

  • EDU 580 – Literacy Institute (on campus, 1 week, 3-6 cr.—a student may take the Literacy Institute Practicum online in the following academic year to earn a total of 6 credits)
  • EDU 580 – Literacy Institute Practicum (online, Fall/Spring, 3 cr. assigned in spring)
  • EDU 580 – MWP Summer Institute (Application process, on campus, 3 weeks; online 1 week; 6 cr.), leads to certification as a National Writing Project teacher-consultant)
  • ERL 590 – Seminar in the Memoir (online, semester, 3 credits)
  • ERL 590 – Selected Seminar*

*Selected Seminars may include

  • Seminar in Writing Nonfiction (on campus, 1 week, 3 credits)
