Wabanaki Writers Project Explores Writing and Culture

Paul Frost ’06 discusses the impact and importance of the Wabanaki Writers Project.

The Wabanaki Writers Project, working with the Paul Frost ’06 of the Maine Writing Project, begins its third year as a youth program that blends literacy work and outdoor experiences. Wabanaki teachers and students got busy writing during a summer class, all designed with cultural relevancy for Wabanaki youth in mind.

“One of the things that they didn’t think that they would learn . . . they didn’t realize that writing could be so fun. In some of the atmospheres in school, they’re forced and railroaded into writing certain things, in certain ways, and their opinions are often crushed. Out here they realize they can actually be themselves, and they can actually be rewarded for who they are.”  -Paul Frost ’06
