The Collector app may be used on any smartphone. This manual requires that you abide by the agreed upon disclosure available at <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/research\/monarch-model-validator\/monarch-validator-disclosure\/\">at this link.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This manual broken into two parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Steps completed outside the Collector app<\/li>\n<li>Steps completed within the Collector app<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Steps completed outside Collector:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This application requires you to take photos that are geotagged (i.e., have location coordinates embedded in the file) as well as the \u201cappropriate\u201d orientation. The survey you will be completing within the Collector app will ask whether you uploaded all directional photos. This means you should take four directional photos: <strong>North<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>East<\/strong>, <strong>South<\/strong>, and <strong>West<\/strong>. This should be done with the camera capturing the area at both the <strong>Local <\/strong>level (within 5 yards\/meters of your feet) and <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>level (approximately 50 yards\/meters, horizon photos). While there may be other ways to accomplish these tasks, this manual will instruct you on two equivalent methods. 1) Manually orienting geotagged photos, OR 2) Using Solocator app.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1: Manually orienting geotagged photos<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on location services for your photos (<strong><u>iPhone<\/u><\/strong>)\n<ul>\n<li>Open Settings on your phone<\/li>\n<li>Privacy<\/li>\n<li>Location Services<\/li>\n<li>Camera<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>While Using the App<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Turn on location services for your photos (<strong><u>Android<\/u><\/strong>)\n<ul>\n<li>Open the camera app on your phone<\/li>\n<li>Select Settings<\/li>\n<li>Location Tag<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>On&nbsp;<\/strong>button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once you have made your way to the validation site (to be discussed later), take directional <strong>Local&nbsp;<\/strong>photos (photograph the area within 5 yards\/meters of your feet)\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open your Compass app and orient yourself so you are facing North<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Take your first Local photo (North)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Turn 90 degrees clockwise and take your second <strong>Local&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (East).<\/li>\n<li>Turn 90 degrees clockwise and take your third <strong>Local&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (South).<\/li>\n<li>Turn 90 degrees clockwise and take your fourth <strong>Local&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (West).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-172 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/compass.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/compass.png 193w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/compass-105x116.png 105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Take directional <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>photos (photograph the area between your location and 50 yards\/meters away)\n<ul>\n<li>Open your Compass app and orient yourself so you are facing North<\/li>\n<li>Take your first <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (North).<\/li>\n<li>Turn 90 degrees clockwise and take your second <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (East).<\/li>\n<li>Turn 90 degrees clockwise and take your third <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (South).<\/li>\n<li>Turn 90 degrees clockwise and take your fourth <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>photo (West).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The ordering is important for these photos, so you can label them appropriately within the survey. This layer should be used as a land cover category reference.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sites to Visit<\/strong>: a point layer identified by the pin icon. These points identify the sites that need to be visited and then validated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Site Evaluation Survey<\/strong>: a point layer with a transparent icon. This layer is the primary survey layer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluated Sites<\/strong>: a point layer identified by the checkmark icon. This layer is a post-survey layer used to identify validation sites that already have been visited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-158\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/tape.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"33\" height=\"22\">&nbsp;&#8211; press to open measurement tool (potentially used to measure distance from current location to a validation point)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-157\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/baselayer.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"28\" height=\"23\">&nbsp;&#8211; press to choose new basemap (e.g., imagery, street map, or topographic map displayed in the background\/under the model to be validated)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Collecting. This process will require you to complete two surveys. You should first complete the <strong>Site Evaluation Survey<\/strong>, followed by the&nbsp;<strong>Evaluated Sites <\/strong>survey.\n<ul>\n<li>Make your way to a validation site of your choosing. These locations can be found on the <strong>Sites to Visit&nbsp;<\/strong>layer (select the \u201c<strong>+<\/strong>\u201d symbol to find the layer options). Each validation site has a unique location ID, which you will need to reference during the <strong>Site Evaluation Survey<\/strong>. You can display the point layer by turning on the <strong>Sites to Visit&nbsp;<\/strong>layer by selecting \u201cmore\u201d and then the \u201cstack of maps\u201d icon.<\/li>\n<li>Once you are at or near the validation site, follow the steps below to complete the <strong>Site Evaluation Survey<\/strong>.\n<ol>\n<li>Press <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-163\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/bullseye.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"19\" height=\"17\">, this will zoom the map to your location.<\/li>\n<li>Press <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-160\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mainecoopunit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/478\/2018\/10\/plus.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"17\" height=\"18\">&nbsp;to begin the survey.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the <strong>Site Evaluation Survey<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Fill out the survey to the best of your ability. Some of the questions require you to make approximations (e.g., percentage estimates of habitat types). Just do your best.<\/li>\n<li>Uploading the photos. Please follow the above procedure while taking both the <strong>Local&nbsp;<\/strong>and <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>directional photos. Choose the <strong>camera button<\/strong>in the <strong>Site Evaluation Survey&nbsp;<\/strong>part of the Collector app which will take you to a screen to select photos to upload.\n<ol>\n<li>Upload the photos in order, i.e., the first photo uploaded should be the <strong>Local <\/strong>North photo while the final directional photo should be the <strong>Landscape&nbsp;<\/strong>West photo. After each photo is uploaded please <strong>click on&nbsp;<\/strong>the photo and <strong>Rename&nbsp;<\/strong>with the appropriate name. Example: name the <strong>Local <\/strong>North photo \u201cLocal-N\u201d or \u201cLocal North\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Please confirm that you have uploaded all the directional photos by completing the survey questions: \u201cLocal photos:\u201d and \u201cLandscape photos\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>If there are any notable features at this site, i.e., butterflies or other features, please photograph and then name the photo accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Submit the <strong>Site Evaluation Survey<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Follow the steps below to complete the <strong>Evaluated Sites<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Press , this will zoom the map to your location.<\/li>\n<li>Press to begin the survey.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the <strong>Evaluated Sites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm that you have visited the validation site.<\/li>\n<li>Submit the <strong>Evaluated Sites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have submitted this survey, you should see a large \u201cCheck Mark\u201d icon appear at your location.<\/li>\n<li>If you are willing to share your e-mail address, please send an e-mail to monarch-model-group@maine.edu.
