Outdoor Programs To Introduce Opportunities to New Students (OPTIONS):

Excited to begin your life at UMaine? OPTIONS trips are outdoor trips with a focus on teaching you outdoor skills and helping you prepare for your upcoming college experience by meeting awesome new people, making lasting friendships, learning about University life from experienced UMaine students, and making connections that will accelerate your sense of belonging to the community.

OPTIONS is a unique student orientation program.  New students camp, eat, interact, and explore Maine with UMaine staff, faculty, and student trip leaders from the Maine Bound Adventure Center. The OPTIONS experience begins and ends on the UMaine Campus. The time in-between will be spent in the great Maine outdoors.

Acadia Hiking & Climbing

Spend 5 days climbing, hiking, and camping in the beautiful Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. All-Inclusive Price: $390. Choose: June 26-30, 2020 OR July 19-23, 2020

Baxter Traverse

Start at the North Gate of Baxter State Park. Hike south, camping along the way, before attempting to summit Katahdin. All-Inclusive Price: $390. Choose: July 12-16, 2020 OR August 9-13, 2020

Penobscot River Canoe

Serving as a highway for travelers for over 1,000 years, you’ll travel by canoe and camp along the banks of the upper west branch of the Penobscot River. All-Inclusive Price: $390. Choose: July 5-9, 2020 OR August 2-6, 2020

Mahoosuc Mountains Adventure

Hike to mountain summits on the Appalachian Trail, rock climb on big granite walls, or canoe in the shadow of the Mahoosuc Mountains. All-Inclusive Price: $340. Date: August 28-30, 2020

Coastal Islands Adventure

Venture down to the iconic coast of Maine and spend a few days exploring, hiking, and rock climbing.

Maine Business School Outdoor Orientation

Participate in an outdoor experience for incoming students in the Business School. All-Inclusive Price: $450. Date: August 28-30, 2020

Acadia Hiking & Climbing Expedition: Details

Explore the magnificent trails and cliffs of the iconic Maine landmark, Acadia National Park. We’ll tent-camp at Blackwoods Campground. All transportation, gear, food, and instruction is included.

Trip Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Meet at 12 Noon at the Maine Bound Adventure Center, meet your group, and travel to Blackwoods Campground.
  • Day 2-4: Hike and rock climb at Acadia National Park.
  • Day 5: Finish your expedition and head back to campus.

Accommodations: Tent camping and outdoor-cooked meals.


Baxter Backpacking Traverse Expedition: Details

Traverse Baxter State Park and attempt to summit Mt. Katahdin! We’ll tent-camp at several remote tent-site campgrounds in Baxter State Park. All transportation, gear, food, and instruction is included.

Trip Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Meet at 12 Noon at the Maine Bound Adventure Center, meet your group, and travel to Baxter State Park.
  • Day 2-4: Traverse Baxter State Park from North to South, with an attempt to summit Katahdin on Day 4.
  • Day 5: Finish your expedition and head back to campus.

Accommodations: Tent camping and outdoor-cooked meals.


Penobscot River Canoe Expedition: Details

Paddle blades have been slicing through the waters of the Penobscot river for over 1,000 years. The upper west branch is a popular section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and the Thoreau- Wabanaki Trail. Learn all about canoe camping, a classic Maine tradition. All transportation, gear, food, and instruction is included.

Trip Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Meet at 12:00 p.m at the Maine Bound Adventure Center, meet your group, and travel to Lobster Lake in the North Maine Woods.
  • Day 2-4: Hike Lobster Mountain, canoe down the Penobscot River, and explore Chesuncook Village.
  • Day 5: Finish your expedition and head back to campus.

Accommodations: Tent camping and outdoor-cooked meals.


Mahoosuc Mountains Adventure: Details

Our base camp is University of Maine’s 4H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond located near the Mahoosuc Mountains in western Maine. Thursday you will embark on an adventure activity of your choice (with picnic-style lunch), then return to camp for supper and group activities.  On Friday morning you’ll participate in one more activity before returning to campus in the afternoon. All transportation, gear, food, and instruction is included.

  • Wednesday August 28:  Drop off your belongings at your residence hall at 12 Noon, check in at the Rec Center parking lot at 1:30 p.m. to meet your group, and leave for Bryant Pond at 2:30 p.m.
  • Thursday August 29: Participate in an adventure from the list of activities below.
  • Friday August 30: Participate in one more activity before returning to campus in the afternoon.

Adventure Activity Choices: Each activity will be guided by a Maine Bound student instructor and/or professional UMaine staff.

  • Hiking: Choose from a variety of hikes in the Mahoosuc Mountains and Grafton Notch State Park, including Goose Eye, Old Speck, and the Bald Pates.
  • Canoeing: Androscoggin River or local lakes and ponds.
  • Rock Climbing: Check out the granite slabs in western Maine.

Accommodations: Cabins, and meals in the 4H cafeteria.


Coastal Islands Adventure: Details

Our base camp is University of Maine’s 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Blueberry Cove nestled in Tenants Harbor. On Thursday you will embark on an adventure activity of your choice (with picnic-style lunch), then return to camp early in the afternoon for group activities and supper. All transportation, gear, food, and instruction is included.

  • Wednesday August 28: Drop off your belongings at your residence hall at 12 Noon, check in at the Rec Center parking lot at 1:30 PM, and leave for Blueberry Cove at 2:30 p.m.
  • Thursday August 29: Choose your own adventure from the list of activities below. Upon returning to camp there will be time for group recreation activities for those who wish.
  • Friday August 30: Spend the morning in one last activity prior to returning to campus.

Adventure Activity Choices: Each activity will be guided by a Maine Bound student instructor and/or professional UMaine staff.

  • Hiking: Spend the day exploring the coast.
  • Rock Climbing: Climb in Camden Hills State Park

Accommodations: Cabins, dining hall buffet-style meals.


Maine Business School Outdoor Orientation: Details

Travel to the University of Maine’s 4H camp at Greenland Point. From there, embark on a 3 night canoe expedition on Big Lake. On expedition you’ll learn canoeing and wilderness travel skills while building connections with other incoming business students. All transportation, gear, food, and instruction is included.

  • Sunday August 23: Meet on campus for early move in and travel to Greenland Point.
  • Monday August 24: Leave for canoe expedition.
  • August 25-26: Canoe expedition. Learn canoe and wilderness travel skills.
  • Thursday August 27: Finish canoe expedition and return to Greenland Point.

Accommodations: Cabins at Greenland Point and tent camping on the expedition.
