Photo by Jason Carley<\/figcaption><\/figure><em>Tillandsia usneoides <\/em>is an aesthetically impressive plant and has a ubiquitous presence throughout the southern United States, where it can be seen draped from a wide variety of trees. <em>Tillandsia usneoides <\/em>favors Bald Cypress (<em>Taxodium distichum<\/em>) and Southern Live Oak (<em>Quercus virginiana<\/em>), but will grow hanging from most any tree or man-made structure where it can receive a large amount of light. Fortunately, <em>T. usneoides<\/em> is non-parasitic and does little harm to the trees on which it resides.<\/p>\n<p>Although currently valued mostly for its beauty <em>T. usneoides<\/em> has a history of great importance.\u00a0It was used by many Native American tribes, such as the Seminole, for many functions including wrapping for fire arrows, clay pottery, canoe reinforcement, and even diaper padding.[1] <\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"572\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/littlefieldgarden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2012\/06\/tillandsia_harvest.jpg\" alt=\"tillandsia harvest\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" class=\"size-full wp-image-572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/littlefieldgarden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2012\/06\/tillandsia_harvest.jpg 300w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/littlefieldgarden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2012\/06\/tillandsia_harvest-105x79.jpg 105w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/littlefieldgarden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2012\/06\/tillandsia_harvest-210x158.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 85vw, (max-width: 768px) 67vw, (max-width: 1024px) 62vw,300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Collecting Spanish Moss.
