{"id":191,"date":"2018-05-07T09:35:36","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T13:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/leadership\/?page_id=191"},"modified":"2025-06-19T17:45:29","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T21:45:29","slug":"dirigo-leadership-service-living-learning-community-llc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/leadership\/dirigo-leadership-service-living-learning-community-llc\/","title":{"rendered":"Dirigo Leadership and Service Living-Learning Community (LLC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading191_e5978c-be\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading191_e5978c-be\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be img.kb-inline-image, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading191_e5978c-be\"] img.kb-inline-image{width:150px;vertical-align:baseline;}<\/style>\n<h1 class=\"kt-adv-heading191_e5978c-be wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading191_e5978c-be\"><strong>Dirigo Leadership and Service Living-Learning Community (LLC)<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dirigo, the Maine state motto, is Latin for \u201cI lead.\u201d &nbsp;Maine has a long history of service-oriented leaders, and we hope to encourage future generations to follow in their footsteps. &nbsp;The Dirigo Leadership and Service LLC is an innovative leadership development program based on the idea that true leadership must be oriented around service to others. &nbsp;We believe that a devotion to selfless community service can transform students\u2019 lives and improve the health of our communities.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program reinforces these principles through several interconnected lines of programming:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Pre-Semester Leadership Trip:<\/strong> The program begins with a group trip prior to the start of the academic year that takes of advantage of Maine\u2019s unique outdoor opportunities, builds teamwork among participants, and establishes a solid foundation for success in the LLC.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Living-Learning Community:<\/strong> Students are part of a residential living-learning community, which includes extensive leadership programming under the guidance of a UMaine faculty member and a trained graduate assistant. &nbsp;Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in leadership workshops, social activities, and other campus events that reinforce the program\u2019s core principles and ideals.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Curricular Component:<\/strong> Students in the LLC enroll in a special offering of LDR 100 \u2013 Foundations of Leadership in the fall semester. &nbsp;This course will introduce students to core concepts in the field of leadership studies and provide students with a strong foundation for future leadership endeavors. &nbsp;In the spring, students take an advanced course on Leadership and Service. These courses provide credit toward the Leadership Studies minor. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Experiential Community Service Project:<\/strong> As part of the Leadership and Service course, students will have the opportunity to design and implement an intensive community service project, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, in the late winter or early spring. &nbsp;The project will connect the ideals and values of the program in a comprehensive, holistic manner.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dirigo Leadership Conference:<\/strong> Students will help plan and participate in the annual statewide Dirigo Leadership Conference, which includes workshops, networking opportunities, breakout sessions, and keynote lecture from an internationally recognized leader.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2018 &#8211; 2019 Dirigo LLC Recap:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018-2019, the Dirigo Leadership and Service LLC performed several service programs related to poverty, homeless, and economic insecurity. The LLC served meals at the Salvation Army and partnered with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/welcometohousing.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Welcome to Housing<\/a>, an all-volunteer non-profit in Old Town that provides free household goods to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. Students spent time organizing Welcome to Housing&#8217;s furniture warehouse, designed new informational brochures, assembled an information and resource guide, and helped the organization plan
