SUMMARY:Anne Knowles on "Landscapes of Remembrance"
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 17th as we mark Yom HaShoah with a public lecture by Professor Anne Knowles on “Landscapes of Remembrance.”\n\nThere are now thousands of Holocaust memorials around the world\, from the vast grounds of former concentration camps to the palm-size “stumbling stones” that mark where individuals last lived before they were deported or killed. This presentation will reflect on the meanings memorials convey\, asking how the Holocaust is remembered – and forgotten – in the landscapes where it took place.\n\nAnne Kelly Knowles is McBride Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Maine\, where she leads the Digital & Spatial History Lab. Her books include studies of 19th-century Welsh immigration to the United States and America’s struggle to compete with British industry\, edited books on applying GIS to history\, and the first book of essays exploring the Holocaust from geographical perspectives. She is known internationally as a pioneer in historical GIS and a leader of the spatial turn in Holocaust Studies. Anne’s research has been supported by many grants and fellowships\, including interdisciplinary grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2012 her work was recognized by the first annual American Ingenuity Award for Historical Scholarship from Smithsonian magazine.\n\nThis event will also be live-streamed on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@umainejudaicstudies

SUMMARY:"A Tree of Life" Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Judaic Studies is honored to host a free screening of the documentary film “A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting” with a live panel discussion with survivors of that terrible attack.\n\n\n\nOn October 27th\, 2018\, a gunman opened fire inside a Pittsburgh synagogue\, killing eleven people as they prayed\, in what would become the deadliest antisemitic attack in American history. A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting is a deeply personal portrait of the survivors\, victims and family members\, who share their harrowing first-hand accounts of the impact of the shooting on the community. The film is rooted in a community in the aftermath of a violent attack\, as they work to rebuild and heal. Despite core differences\, they come together to determine what justice looks like and how to best move forward while honoring and learning from the past. The film sheds light on the collective trauma suffered by a tight-knit group and brings into sharp focus the hate-based rhetoric that surrounds many of the mass shootings today\, threatening the fabric of our society.\n\nJoin us in Donald P. Corbet room 100 at 2:00 pm on Sunday February 4th\, 2024 for this free screening and discussion

SUMMARY:Silent Voices Remembered
DESCRIPTION:Silent Voices Remembered  \nA concert of Holocaust memorial trios presented by the Essex Piano Trio (Ashley Offret\, violin / David Cabral\, cello / Beverly Soll\, piano). \nEntitled Silent Voices Remembered\, the concert of Holocaust memorial trios will explore the music of five composers dating from the 1940s to the present.  Although the subject is dark\, the music is gorgeous\, and Essex Piano Trio believes audiences will be inspired by this remembrance\, which\, while portraying and mourning the atrocities of this genocide\, also – as only art can – celebrates the courage and resilience of those who survived and expresses hope for the future of the Jewish people and others targeted by hatred and violence. \nUMaine – Silent Voices Flyer 20240416

SUMMARY:"Ain't No Back to a Merry-Go-Round"
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Maine Jewish Film Festival (MJFF)\, UMaine Judaic Studies is honored to screen the award-winning film “Ain’t no Back to a Merry-Go-Round” by Emmy Award-winning Jewish director Ilana Trachtman in Minsky Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Maine on September 28th\, 2025.\n\nThis documentary tells the largely unknown story of a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement when\, in 1960\, racially segregated Glen Echo Amusement Park was the scene of a sit-in by black students from nearby Howard University\, and white\, predominantly Jewish\, protesters quickly joined them. As the filmmakers put it\, “Using just-discovered archival footage\, and focusing on the stories of six individuals\, viewers are transported to those heady days\, when private businesses could choose their customers\, and the walls between Black and white were so high that friendships were unimaginable.”\n\nThe film\, which has been hailed by the DC Black Film and the Boston Jewish Film Festivals among many others\, is both an essential record of a shared history too often forgotten and an occasion for bringing communities together for dialogue and tikkun olam. The film also has a local connection with Helene Wilson\, of blessed memory\, and sister of Arnold Berleant\, who features prominently.\nTo facilitate community dialogue\, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with a “who’s who” of Maine Civil Rights Leaders\, including Rachel Talbot Ross\, Michael Alpert\, and Athena Witham. They will be joined by an American historian from the University of Maine faculty to lead a discussion of the film and its lessons for us today.
