At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. From North of Bangor: Take I-95 to Exit 193 Stillwater Ave (old exit 51); Take a left at the top of the exit ramp across the highway, onto Stillwater Ave.; At the fourth light (McDonalds and Maine Savings are on the corners), take a right on to College Avenue.

From South of Bangor: Take I-95 to Exit 193 Stillwater Ave (old exit 51); Take a right at the top of the exit ramp across the highway, onto Stillwater Ave.; At the fourth light (McDonalds and Maine Savings are on the corners), take a right on to College Avenue.

Once on College Avenue, look for the big University of Maine sign and Alfond Arena with the big white roof. Turn left here onto Long Road. You may obtain a visitor parking pass at Bear Necessities in Alfond Arena. Continue on Long Road. At the gymnasium, the road curves sharply to the right, and then again to the left. Pass by Beddington and Flagstaff Roads on your right. After Flagstaff, you will see a parking lot and then a wooded area. The Innovation Center is in the wooded area.

We recommend parking in the lot behind the Versant Astronomy Center, located at 167 Rangeley Road. Simply continue past the Foster Center on Long Road – the Astronomy Center should be visible at the top of the hill in front of you. Turn left in front of the Astronomy Center onto Rangeley Road and then right into the parking lot. Visitor parking is located behind the building.

Accessible parking is available in the circle between the Foster Center and the Patch Residence Hall. Follow the paved path along the side of the building to the accessible entrance at the rear.
